Description: A group of alien ships come along and decide to mug Voyager. They steal several key components, including phasers, a site-to-site transporter, the computer core, and the Doctor's mobile emitter. Deciding to get the things back, they travel to a commerce planet where Tau has brought these items to sell. Once there, Janeway and Tuvok discover something amazing: Leonardo da Vinci is now running off the mobile emitter, and is working for the bad guys.
They find the warehouse where it's kept, where Da Vinci leads them inside and they get back the computer. Leonarda da Caprio, I mean da Vinci, is accidentally shot, but he's okay 'cause he's just a hologram. Janeway continues letting the program run, even though it's painfully obvious that turning him off is the best for all concerned, except the viewers who enjoy the morbid fascination of this scene. They then fly away on a glider. The End.
Comments: I like the Da Vinci character, especially John Reys-Davies portrayal. But this was completely unnecessary, and it actually made me uncomfortable to watch. If you want to break in, do you bring the master inventor, or do you maybe recreate some commando? I think the Terminator would've done a much better job finding the computer. He might have brought back a few other things too.
Special Silvermoose Commentary: I love the muggers in this episode. The only way it seems they can be defeated is being thumped on the back of the head. I say this because I saw one guy get thumped on the back of the repeatedly throughout the episode. Maybe they should steal some helmets. As far as muggers go they were pretty lame. I didn't understand why they couldn't stop Janeway and Da Vinci escaping in the final scene. After all, just because they're on a glider and are obvious flying targets doesn't make them immune to phaser fire! "Hey Bob, they're in the air. Our weapons are worthless now."
And now a word on John Ryes-Davies. He's a high quality actor. How he got involved in a production like this, I have no idea. Did he lose all his money gambling or something, and now needs work? Desperation is a sad thing. All I can say is: Paramount, at least let him keep his dignity!
Rating: 4
Best Moment: Da Vinci summing up the viewer's thoughts. "Are we in purgatory?" I wondered that myself.
Seven of Nine Moment: Seven jumping on a trampoline. Or was that a dream I was having? Whatever it was, I liked it.
Stupid Neelix Moment: His existence.
Continuity Question: Why would the bad guys give Da Vinci a lab? I really can't understand that one at all.
